PRO-PACKING TIPS

We will take two domestic flights in India. Therefore, for this tour, each person should plan and carry:

  • one large suitcase which will be checked-in, and

  • one small carry-on suitcase or backpack

Each of these must meet your airline specifications regarding the permitted dimensions and weight. Please also consult the TSA website to see what you are allowed to carry in your checked and carry-on luggage.

Depending on the airline you select for the international flight, the baggage dimensions and weight allowance will vary for both checked and carry on luggage. Please look on your airline website to see what their allowances are for international flights to India.

Take one example: Air Canada allows one checked suitcase for free with a max. weight of 23kg (50lb) and maximum linear dimensions** of 158 cm (62in).

[** maximum linear dimensions of a piece of baggage are calculated by adding together its greatest outside height, width and length – wheels and handles included].

And for carry-on luggage, Air Canada allows each person:

When we are in India, we will do some shopping at our first port of entry, New Delhi.

  • We will leave the souvenirs you have bought, with two changes of clean clothes and underwear, in the carry-on suitcase/ bag, which will be stored at our hotel, and retrieved when we return to Delhi at the end of the tour.

  • For the rest of our tour in India, we will carry the large suitcase with your clothing and gear. We have two domestic flights. One from Jaipur to Jodhpur and the other from Udaipur to New Delhi. The baggage allowance, per person, for domestic flights is 30lb (checked bag) + one backpack (carry-on). So, pack light and be prepared to shed clothing and gear as you replace them with souvenirs. Some stores offer the option to ship your goods home for a modest price. That is highly recommended for bulky and heavy purchases. You are only allowed 33 lbs for the checked in suitcase and 15 lbs for the carry-on bag on domestic flights in India.

  • You should also have a small day bag to carry your bottle of water, camera, phone, and other personal items.

  • Your money belt or neck travel passport holder should contain your cash, credit cards, and passport for the duration of the tour. It should never come off your body until you're back in your hotel room.

Try and get the lightest travel luggage, with wheels, and a durable hard shell that can withstand the shocks and jolts of being thrown about by rough airport baggage handlers. Weigh your checked in and carry on bags to make sure you don't go over the weight allowance in each case.

Other tips:

  • Please secure all your luggage, including your backpack, with TSA approved locks.

  • To easily identify your bags, tie a distinct ribbon to your luggage handles. make sure this is wrapped around the handles with no trailing ends that can get caught on a baggage carousel, or interfere with scanning the bags.

  • Take old stickers off the bag, it can cause confusion with the scanning process.

  • Make sure you have luggage tags on the outside and inside of your all bags. Your full name, destination address, and contact information should be on these. The destination details will be provided in spring 2026.

  • Packing cubes can separate dirty clothes from fresh ones and make it easy to locate stuff. Carry wire hangers if you plan to wash underwear/clothing in the hotel sink. You'll need them to hang your clothing in the bathroom, to dry. Hotel hangers no longer have a hook that allows that.

  • Please squeeze the air out of  bottles that have liquids and put them in a ziplock bag before placing them in your checked suitcase.

  • You are allowed to bring a quart-sized bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes in your carry-on bag and through the checkpoint. These are limited to travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. Read more here.

  • If you line the bottom of your suitcase with bubble wrap, it'll come in handy for wrapping delicate souvenirs.

  • Have a ball point pen or two handy in your carry on bag for filling out custom and immigration forms in airports.

  • Some folks throw Apple AirTags into checked baggage so they can track lost bags using their iPhone.

  • Finally, when you check in your suitcase at the airport, make sure you keep the baggage claim tag in a safe place with your passport and boarding passes. You will beed the baggage claim tag to reclaim your bags at your destination.
