Professor Dr. Ishita Sinha Roy has taught Media & Cultural Studies at Allegheny College since 2001. Dr. Sinha Roy received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, where she also taught before moving to Pennsylvania. She specializes in postcolonial investigations of global media, with an emphasis on nation-branding.
Her recent book, Manufacturing Indianness examines the merging of populism, religious fundamentalism, and a free market logic in the strategic marketing of the Hindutva ('pure' Hindu) brand of neoliberal nationalism in the sub-continent.

Ishita has led several Experiential Learning Study Abroad Seminars for academic credit, at the college. She designed, and for several years taught the mandatory intercultural communication course (EXL300) that is taken by all study abroad students in an Allegheny-sponsored program. Ishita was also the Co-Principle Investigator on an Andrew W. Mellon Grant for Internationalizing the Campus, and appointed as the Faculty Study Away liaison at Allegheny College.
Among the various community-based projects she has initiated, "Growing Hearts. Growing Minds" was formed with Allegheny College students, and in collaboration with the Rotary Club of mid-town Bombay, India. The group was involved in educational initiatives within an internationally renowned global sustainability project from 2008-16, in the tribal village of Baste in western India. A large part of the project focused on educating girls, providing them with vocational training opportunities, and forming a women's cooperative that spurred female entrepreneurship and earning power. Ishita is currently part of a cohort of "Civic Engagement Leaders" at Allegheny College, in which capacity she is designing courses with a strong built-in community outreach component.

In 2000, Ishita was awarded the student-nominated teaching award at the Annenberg School of Communication (USC), and in 2008, she received the Thoburn Award for Excellence in Teaching at Allegheny College.

She was the Provost's appointee in leading the "Sustained Dialogues" employee initiative at Allegheny College during 2017-18. Together with Dr. Waggett, Ishita is co-leading the 2020-2023 Global Citizen Scholars' Cohort on "Empowering Women and Girls Across the World."
